Computer Lab

In the Primary Computer Lab, we have 18 personal PC's, 1 iMac, 19 windows laptops, 3 MacBooks and 1 tablet windows laptop computer. Each of them is set up with hardware and software to provide alternative means of accessing the computer for people with disabilities.

In the Secondary Computer Lab, we have 5 personal PC's specifically geared toward low vision and blindness. These computers have the latest software and hardware to assist persons with visual impairments access the computer.

These adaptations include switches of all varieties, including those that let people who cannot use their hands to move a mouse by scanning screen-based alphabetic or modified picture keyboards. Other switches work by simple head, foot or eye movements, or by breathing through a puff tube. We also have larger than usual, one-handed, and color-coded keyboards, along with touch screens, modified mice and joysticks. And more.

The Computer Lab features lots of specialized software for creating access to the computer. These programs include voice input for people who can not use keyboards, screen reading/voice output, conversion for one-handed typing, and for American Sign Language. We also have software available for instruction, for organizing assistive technology, and for transcribing print to Braille. And more.

The hardware on display ranges in price and complexity. By visiting the lab, potential users can try out equipment--essential before making purchase decisions. This gives Computer Lab users an opportunity to test alternatives and find the ones that work best for them.
